捕蟹人是全球最高危的职业之一，从走上捕蟹船的那一刻开始，渔民们便时刻都处于危险当中。捕捞开始后，渔民们必须爬上高高叠放在甲板上的捕蟹笼，解开绳索，将它们放入大海中。把捕篓放入大海时，船员的手有被捕篓挂住的危险。但更危险的还是回收捕篓的时候。要保证将重达六七百公斤的捕篓拖上颠簸的船，同时还不能伤人，又要防止掉进笼子里，让自己成为第一只“大螃蟹”。为了赶在捕蟹季节结束之前再次出海，渔民们必须尽快将船装满。因此，在捕蟹季节，捕蟹人往往一天要工作21个小时，有时甚至是连轴转。极度的疲劳加上寒冷的气候，使渔民们的反应逐渐变得迟钝，在颠簸打滑的甲板上开始站立不稳，许多人就是在这种情况下被凶猛的巨浪卷入海中，溺水身亡。

当装满螃蟹的捕蟹笼被提上船时，渔民们在满怀喜悦的同时，也面临着巨大的危险。他们可能不仅要经受时速高达128公里的狂风以及12 米高巨浪的吹打，而且还时刻处于被摇摆着的、重达318千克的钢制捕蟹笼猛击的危险之中。 20小时一班的做法很普遍，通常是在零度以下温度中工作，并要站在颠簸得很厉害的湿滑甲板上。几乎每一个阿拉斯加捕蟹人回到岸上时身上都带着伤：压伤的手和手指，以及折断的肋骨、胳膊和腿。在最糟糕的意外事故中，还会有人丢掉性命：在丧生的人当中，80%以上是被异常凶猛的海水卷落下船，溺水而死。
